Contratulations, Andrew!

In May, we were happy to celebrate the graduation of Andrew Camp, who is headed to UNC-Chapel Hill for a PhD in Chemistry! Andrew was also honored with the inaugural “Ronald E. Noftle Honors Thesis Award.” We’re very proud of Andrew and wish him the best!

Chem223 Class Project 2014

ORGANIC CHEMISTRY MATTERS!

Deacon-ChemistInspired by the excellent, informative, eye-catching info-graphics found HERE, the students in my 2014 Chem 223 Class (Organic 2) were instructed to generate their own “poster” on an assigned topic.

Students were assigned a partner and topic (randomly drawn Stoltz-style from a fleeker). They were provided some guidelines on what chemical questions should be answered, but were otherwise given free creative license.

This also gave us a great opportunity to learn about copyright. We were glad for a visit to class from my amazing colleague, Molly Keener.

I’m very proud of their efforts, posted below! (References at the bottom).

Goodbye Summer Students, Goodbye Summer

20140627_130635

Fred, Carolin, Justin, Wentong, Prof. ACJ, Dwaine, Andrew, Yuyang, Sixbert

We had a great group of students this summer. Here we are mid-summer (June 27) bidding goodbye to Dwaine. We will miss him.  Later we also said goodbye to our visiting student Sixbert (Belhaven University).  They will both live on in our minds as we finish working with their research results! We’re sure to meet them again during conferences or other travel, and wish them the best.

Meanwhile, the fall semester is nearly upon us…..we’re looking forward to a good and busy year!

Thank you NSF!

We are pleased to announce that the group has received strong support in the form of a National Science Foundation research grant. Prof. ACJ has been awarded an NSF: Career award to develop her educational and scholarly activities. This grant will fund our investigations of the mechanisms of gold catalyzed reactions, and support the training of undergraduate and graduate students. Check back here for more details on our plans!

This news was nicely featured by the Wake Forest Communications department.

Summer Travels, A Telluride Treat

Sign Group

This July, I (Prof. Jones) had the pleasure of attending a truly unique conference. Over the course of 5 days in Telluride, a small group of 14 chemists met for intensive discussion of their research. Each person had ca. 90 minutes to present their work. The environment was highly collegial and interactive. I feel like I got to know these people very well, and obtained some excellent feedback on my group’s work. I look forward to future discussions/interactions with this great group of chemists.

A big thank you to the organizers, Matt McIntosh, Kay Brummond, and Dean Tantillo, and to the Telluride Research Science Center for being host to such a great event.

There was a lot of chemistry discussed, but there was also a little time for this:

Commencement!

Congratulations to the 2014 graduates of Wake Forest University!

Two of our undergraduates, Dwaine Hodges and Ellen Petryna, graduated with B.S. degrees in chemistry.  We’re very proud of them!  It was a beautiful day for a graduation ceremony, and we look forward to hearing of Dwaine’s and Ellen’s future successes!

Yuyang, Ellen

Dwaine presented an Honors Thesis on April 25th, another group milestone!  We’ll be working on finalizing a publication on that work this summer!

Yuyang’s wife Lin Zhang earned her M.Sci. this week too.

Molecules and Music

The seeds for this project were planted long ago — before I even joined the Stoltz group.
A lot of labor went into completing it, and I’m proud to finally see it published!
