Bob attended graduate school at Auburn University in Auburn Alabama, from 1961 to 1965.  He received a PhD in Applied Mathematics in 1965.

After graduating he held research positions at Martin-Marietta and the National Security Agency. Afterwards he was a professor in the Mathematics and Computer Science Departments at the University of Mississippi, University of Tennessee, North Carolina State University, and finally Wake Forest University, his Alma Mater.
